Q
I heard you came back to the Bullring to race in the Fall Classic. How was it and how do you manage all of that with going to school?
A
Yes we were fortunate enough to put together a phenomenal partnership with Belmont Abbey College to promote their "Got Monks?" campaign which allowed us to race at the Fall Classic. I absolutely love that race. The amount of cars there and the energy around the pits is unlike any other race I've ever been to. We qualified second in an extremely competitive 48 car field and ran there for most of the race. However, around the half-way point of the race, we cut down a right-front tire which took us out of contention for the win. I was very disappointed because we had over 150 friends and family members there, but it was out of our control. There really were a ton of people who made the entire week possible for me. As you can imagine, I was very busy with homework. However, my family and our close friends really stepped up to take things over so that I could focus on the race and getting all that homework done. So I owe them a huge "thank you"!
Q
How are you enjoying college and how has living in North Carolina and being part of the first ever 4-year degree in Motorsports given you new insights into the world of racing?
A
So far I love Belmont Abbey College and North Carolina. It's been a bit of a culture shock moving here as everything is very different from the west coast. But the school is perfect for me. It's very small and personal which was a huge factor in why I chose BAC above the rest. As far as the Motorsports Management program goes, I unfortunately don't start taking any of those courses or internships for a couple more semesters. Right now I'm working on completing my prerequisites (accounting, economics, etc) for the program as well as my core Honors Institute classes.
Q
I'm 12 and would love to be a race car driver someday. How do you suggest I break in and is it expensive?
A
Haha! Well that's funny because I was your age when I started racing! In my opinion you're at the perfect age to start out. The best way to begin is by starting in karts. They are relatively cheap to race in comparison to everything else and will allow you to get a better feel for the sport. The most important thing is to have fun though. For the first two years that I raced, I had no intentions of turning it into a career. It was just a fun hobby which allowed me to spend time with my family. That's the most important thing.
